The New York Mets have a long road ahead of them, and they’ve lost a key player to injury.
The Mets placed first baseman Pete Alonso on the disabled list ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Alonso left the game against the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 8 after being hit by a sand dune in his left hand.
X-rays at the time showed no abnormalities, but upon further examination, he was diagnosed with a bone bruise and a sprained ligament in his left wrist. “Typically, these injuries take three to four weeks to recover from,” the Mets said, adding that Alonso will be out for an extended period of time.
In a pregame interview, Mets manager Buck Showalter described Alonso’s injury as “exactly what it says in the press release.”
He said the injury was “part of what happens when you hit in the major leagues,” adding, “He’s handled these challenges well before. We’ll see.”
Alonso, the 2019 National League Rookie of the Year and two-time All-Star, was batting .231 with a .326 on-base percentage and .546 slugging percentage in 62 games this season. He led the majors with 22 home runs and the National League with 49 RBIs.
His absence is going to be urgent. For now, Mark Canha will start at first base in tonight’s game 스포츠토토.
Meanwhile, the Mets recalled infielder Luis Guillome and left-hander Zach Merkenhein from Triple-A Syracuse and designated right-hander Steven Nogosek for assignment. Catcher Tomas Nido was claimed off waivers and retained at Triple-A.
The Mets also announced that right-hander Edwin Ucheta had surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He was expected to have an eight-week recovery time.
